Business with Ireland

While most people would think business in Ireland would be no different the  business domestically. However there are some important differences anyone wishing to deal with the Emerald isle should keep in mind.

  • Family and Church are Important
    • Extended family is very important in Irish culture.Keep this in mind when making small talk.
    • The Church up until the early 1990's was the dominant influence in culture and politics. This influence has begun to wane but it still holds significant sway and creates many socially conservative views.
  • Humor is Required
    • Humor is central to Irish culture. Irish humor is quick witted and often includes good-natured insults and/or self-deprecation. Anyone dealing with the Irish must be able to take a joke otherwise any dealings will collapse into being brushed off
  • Communication is Key
    • Communication is an art in ireland and make sure anyone doing buisness with them can communicate eloquently.
    • Do not be boastful, it is a major turnoff in Irish culture. Modesty is valued.
    • Politeness is preferred over absolute truth.
    • Humor is often used to avoid confrontation. If a contentious proposal is met with a joke it doesn't mean its not being taken seriously. And it shouldn't be taken personally. However their is a good chance the answer is no. Push the issue at your own risk
